A flat, dead lawn with nothing going on is one of the most common starting points we see. No shade, no seating, no reason to spend time outside. That's exactly what we were working with here - a blank slate that had potential but needed a real plan behind it.

We started with a full design concept before a single stone was set. The layout maps out every zone - a flagstone patio off the back of the house, a fire pit gathering area, a dedicated camping spot, raised garden beds, a pollinator garden, and a second patio connected by a stepping stone path. Getting that plan right upfront is what keeps a build like this from feeling pieced together. Everything here has a purpose and a place.

The main patio closest to the house is a large curved flagstone surface - a warm reddish tone that ties in naturally with the stepping stones running through the gravel. Those stones lead you deeper into the yard, past the raised cedar garden beds and through the gravel area toward the fire pit in the back. The arborvitae planted along the fence line add structure and privacy without needing much water. That matters in Boulder, where smart, low-maintenance plant choices go a long way.

The pollinator garden and raised beds bring life and function to what used to be dead grass. It's the kind of outdoor living space that actually gets used - for morning coffee, evening fires, weekend gardening, or just letting the kids run around. Multiple zones mean multiple reasons to be outside.

This is the kind of work we love doing. Taking something unused and turning it into a space that fits the way a family actually lives. The stonework, the planting plan, the layout - it all came together because we spent time on the design before the build ever started.
